Handling is one of the most important aspects of any car, as you all know. There’s no use squeezing large amounts of power out of a car if it can’t put the power down on the road.
Even when cars have inherently good handling, there is always room for improvement, and there are many ways of improving a car’s handling. One of the most popular and effective options is coilover suspension.
There are dozens of coilovers to choose from, each of them varying in price, suitable applications, features, and so on. In other words, there’s a coilover for just about every application.
One brand that seems to be on the rise is Ksport. In this article, we’ve put together a review of Ksport’s most popular coilover options.
Most Popular Ksport Coilovers
Ksport USA also sells a variety of suspension and drivetrain components, including big brake kits, air suspension and coilovers. That being said, we’re focusing on their coilover family here.
Ksport’s philosophy is to offer feature-packed, durable, and well-performing coilovers for a surprising price.
You might be a little skeptical, as it’s not a brand name that gets mentioned all that much, but the lineup might just surprise you. Let’s dive right into it.
Kontrol Pro
Category: Street
Construction: Monotube | Fully threaded
Height adjustment: Yes
Damping adjustment: 36 levels
Remote reservoir: None
Suitable applications: Street builds
Ksport Kontrol Pro coilovers provide dual duty as both street and track coilovers, due to the high level of adjustability.
The monotube damper design allows for 36 levels of damping, from the most comfortable to the most handling-focused.
Along with the pillowball top mounts and camber plates, the Kontrol Pros also include an adjustable lower mount.
The 6061-T6 aluminum construction should also make them pretty durable. Unfortunately, they are not rebuildable, but for a price of around $1,000, there’s not much to complain about.
Kontrol Sport
Category: Street
Construction: Monotube | Fully threaded
Height adjustment: Yes
Damping adjustment: 36 levels
Remote reservoir: None
Suitable applications: Street builds, occasional track day builds
As the name implies, the Kontrol Sport lineup is based on the Kontrol Pro, but there are a few key differences.
They include the same excellent feature set, like the 36 levels of adjustable damping and the pillowball mount, not to mention the aerograde aluminum construction and 12-month warranty.
However, the Sports are about 30% stiffer than the Kontrol Pros, which improves steering feel and generally makes cornering more direct.
This makes them great for the occasional track day. They do also include the same one-year warranty, but once again, they’re not rebuildable.
GT Pro
Category: Street
Construction: Monotube | Fully threaded
Height adjustment: Yes
Damping adjustment: 36 levels
Remote reservoir: None
Suitable applications: Track-focused builds
The GT Pro family is higher up on the Ksport coilover food chain, as they’re built for the track. While they use the same basic design and features as the Kontrols, the GT Pro adds some track-focused improvements.
The shock bodies are 55 mm as opposed to 20 mm, and highly durable steel dominates the construction, including in the inverted shock, the top mount, and the lower mounts.
This makes the GT Pro a great coilover setup, as they’re pretty affordable, and, due to the large amounts of steel, they can take a beating.
If you want your coilovers to still be useable on the street but also dabble in the occasional track day, the GT Pro is an excellent middle ground.
Kontrol Plus 2-Way
Category: Street
Construction: Monotube | Fully threaded
Height adjustment: Yes
Damping adjustment: 36 levels
Remote reservoir: Yes
Suitable applications: Street builds, track builds
Finally, we have Kontrol Plus 2-Way, which is their flagship street application coilover. They’re based on the same basic construction as other members of the Kontrol family, but they do have some excellent standout features.
The most notable feature is the remote reservoir, which not only allows for more adjustment in compression and rebound but also more control over both metrics.
The 2-Ways also include an advanced pillow ball mount, as well as anywhere from 30% to 150% harder damping settings.
The Kontrol Pro 2-Way would still work great for a street build, but they’d also provide excellent performance on the track, due to the harder damping and the remote reservoir, which gives you much more intricate adjustment options.
How Good Are Ksport Coilovers?
Ksport coilovers have been around for just over a decade, so they’re still a relative newcomer in this area. While various issues plagued the earliest models, the company appears to have addressed them.
Manufacturing takes place in BC Racing’s facility in Taiwan, and as we know, BC Racing knows a thing or two about coilovers.
If you can live with these not being rebuildable, Ksport coilovers are an excellent, cost-effective way to add coilover suspension to your build, and they have a kit for just about any application.
Each kit includes everything you need, including the damper adjustment tools. Every kit is made to order, and they offer them for a variety of different cars, from Aston Martins to Pontiac Vibes.
Should You Buy Ksport Coilovers?
Handling and aesthetics are an important part of just about every build. A lowered ride height combined with improved cornering abilities are some of the best ways to add form and function to your car.
As we’ve covered before on Low Offset, coilovers are a total game-changer, not just when it comes to changing the appearance, but in terms of significant handling improvements.
There are tons of options out there, like Tein, D2 Racing, and JDMSPEED. But if you’re looking for a set of coilovers that don’t break the bank, but still offer solid build quality and a good feature set, Ksport is a pretty good bet.
